Item Details
Description
William Woodward (American/Louisiana, 1859-1939) , "Old French Quarter Opera House", 1906, Raffaelli oil crayon on board, signed and dated lower right, signed en verso, 15 in. x 19 1/4 in., framed. Note: In 1859, James Gallier, Jr. was commissioned by Charles Boudousquié, director of the opera company in New Orleans, to design a new opera house for the city. The resulting Greek Revival style building, which stood on the corner of Bourbon and Toulouse Streets, was completed in only seven months and became one of the premier locations for New Orleans social life for the next sixty years. Private and public events, including Carnival balls, wedding receptions, concerts, and debuts, were held at the Opera House, making it one of the most well-known structures in the city. On December 3, 1919, a fire of unknown origins spread throughout the entire complex, leaving it in ruins. Although plans to renovate the building were discussed, none ultimately came to fruition.
William Woodward, whose love of historic architecture is well known, created a famous series of historical sketches and paintings of the streets of the French Quarter in the late 1800s and early 1900s, including at least four views of the Old French Opera House. The painting offered here depicts a view of the opera house from the corner of Bourbon and St. Louis Streets. Through the distinctively applied Raffaelli oil crayon, Woodward created an atmospheric and Impressionistic scene. The bright palette, technique of applying broad layers of color, and the energetic crayon strokes add a sense of immediacy to this cohesive scene.
